Class CrunchLabs brings Mark’s passion for science into classrooms by developing free, high-quality, NGSS-designed instructional materials for grades 3-8. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are a set of K-12 science standards designed to prepare students for real-world challenges through critical thinking, problem-solving, and the integration of Science and Engineering Practices (SEP), Crosscutting Concepts (CCC), and Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI).

As a Class CrunchLabs curriculum writer, you will have the opportunity to contribute to this exciting, high-profile initiative and help shape the future of science education by creating high-quality instructional materials that empower teachers and engage students in meaningful, inquiry-based learning.

Responsibilities

As a Class CrunchLab’s NGSS Curriculum Writer, you will:

  1. Collaboratively Develop Curriculum Units:

    • Write NGSS-designed curriculum units for grades 3-8 that include inquiry-based and project-based extensions, real-world applications, technology and simulations, engineering challenges, assessments, and hands-on activities.

    • Ensure each unit integrates key NGSS elements and 3D learning experiences:

      • Anchoring phenomena

      • Disciplinary core ideas (DCI)

      • Science and engineering practices (SEP)

      • Crosscutting concepts (CCC)

      • Grade-appropriate learning outcomes.

    2. Collaborate with the Team:

    • Report to the Head of Education and Research.

    • Work collaboratively with the Curriculum Development Lead and other curriculum writers to maintain consistency, quality, and alignment across all units.

    • Participate in cross-functional collaboration with team members across curriculum design, research, and feedback processes.

    3. Ensure Quality and Accessibility:

    • Develop teacher guides, lesson plans, student-facing materials, and activity instructions that are clear, engaging, and accessible to diverse learners.

    • Incorporate differentiation strategies to support students of varying abilities and learning needs, while promoting 3D learning approaches that combine skills, concepts, and big ideas.

    4. Iterate Based on Feedback:

    • Revise and enhance curriculum units based on feedback from pilot testing, teachers, and internal and external reviews.

    5. Work in a Fast-Paced Environment:

    • Operate autonomously in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

    • Be a self-starter, capable of managing multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree is preferred but not required).

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in curriculum writing or instructional design.

  • Proven track record of writing NGSS-aligned or NGSS-designed curriculum for grades 3-8.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Solid background in science education and NGSS, including three-dimensional learning and performance expectations.

  • Experience designing high-quality instructional materials that incorporate inquiry-based, hands-on STEM activities.

  • Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with curriculum teams and stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with educational technology and digital tools for classroom instruction.

  • Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple projects independently and efficiently.

Preferred Experience:

  • Classroom teaching experience in elementary or middle school science.

  • Familiarity with piloting curriculum in classrooms and incorporating teacher feedback into revisions.

  • Knowledge of instructional strategies for diverse student populations, including Emerging Multilingual Learners (EMLs), and students with learning differences.

  • The ability to incorporate storytelling and fun elements into the curriculum to enhance student engagement is considered a plus.
